Gardasil 4 is a vaccine designed to protect against four types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that can lead to cervical cancer, genital warts, and other cancers such as those of the vulva, vagina, anus, and oropharynx. HPV is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections, and vaccination with Gardasil 4 provides significant protection against the strains most commonly associated with these conditions.
How It Works
Gardasil 4 is a recombinant vaccine that targets four specific types of HPV: types 6, 11, 16, and 18. Types 16 and 18 are responsible for approximately 70% of cervical cancer cases, while types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of genital warts. The vaccine contains virus-like particles (VLPs) that mimic the HPV virus but do not cause infection. These VLPs stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies, providing immunity against future HPV infections from these types.
Administration
- Dosage: Gardasil 4 is typically administered as a series of two/ three doses.
- Schedule:
- The first dose is given at an elected date.
- Given as a series of two or three injections over six months.
- The second dose is given 1-2 months after the first dose.
- The third dose is administered 6 months after the first dose.
- Age Regimen Schedule:
9 through 14 years
2-dose 0, 6 to 12 months
3-dose 0, 2, 6 months
- 15 through 45 years
3-dose 0, 2, 6 months
- If the second dose is administered earlier than 5 months after the first
dose, administer a third dose at least 4 months after the second dose.
- Administration Method: Given as an intramuscular injection, usually in the upper arm (deltoid muscle) or thigh.

- Severe Illness: Vaccination should be postponed in cases of acute, severe febrile illness.
Nature of Antigen
- Nature of Antigen: Gardasil 4 contains virus-like particles (VLPs) derived from the L1 protein of HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18.
Vaccine Type
- Type: Gardasil 4 is a quadrivalent recombinant vaccine, meaning it protects against four specific HPV types.
Origin and Manufacturer
- Origin: Gardasil 4 is an imported vaccine.
- Manufacturer: The vaccine is produced by Merck & Co., Inc., a global healthcare company.
