ABHAYRAB is a vaccine used for the prevention of rabies, a deadly viral infection transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Rabies affects the central nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, making vaccination critical for anyone potentially exposed to the virus.
How It Works
ABHAYRAB contains an inactivated rabies virus, which stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against rabies. These antibodies provide protection by neutralizing the virus if an exposure occurs, preventing the onset of the disease.
Administration
- Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis: Typically administered as a series of three intramuscular injections on days 0, 7, and 21 or 28 for individuals at high risk of exposure, such as veterinarians, laboratory workers, or travelers to rabies-endemic areas.
- Post-Exposure Prophylaxis: Administered as a series of doses after potential exposure to rabies, starting immediately after exposure (day 0) and followed by additional doses on days 3, 7, and 14. If the individual has not been previously vaccinated, a total of five doses may be required.
- Administration Site: Given as an intramuscular injection, usually in the deltoid muscle of the arm.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
- Mild fever
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Muscle aches
Severe reactions are very rare.
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Pregnancy: ABHAYRAB can be administered during pregnancy if there is a significant risk of exposure to rabies. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider.
- Lactation: Safe for breastfeeding mothers.
Minimum Age Group
- Minimum Age: Approved for use in individuals of all ages, including infants.
Contraindications
- Allergic Reactions: Not recommended for individuals with a known severe allergy to any component of the vaccine.
- Severe Illness: Vaccination should be postponed in cases of acute, severe febrile illness unless the potential exposure to rabies poses an immediate risk.
ABHAYRAB is a life-saving vaccine for those at risk of rabies exposure, whether due to their occupation, travel plans, or an unexpected encounter with an infected animal. It is essential for both pre-exposure and post-exposure scenarios. Always consult healthcare providers for detailed vaccination schedules and personalized advice.
