Infanrix Hexa is a 6-in-1 combination vaccine that protects infants and young children against six serious diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, poliomyelitis (polio), and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). It is widely used in pediatric immunization programs.

How It Works:
The vaccine contains inactivated components of the bacteria and viruses that cause these diseases, stimulating the immune system to develop immunity without causing the diseases themselves.

Administration:

3-Dose Regimen:

Primary doses: 3 doses starting at >6 weeks of age, with a minimum 1-month interval between doses.

Booster: Given at least 6 months after the last primary dose, preferably before 18 months of age.

2-Dose Regimen:

Primary doses: 2 doses with a 2-month interval.

Booster: Given >6 months after the last primary dose, preferably between 11-13 months of age.

Administered intramuscularly, usually in the upper thigh for infants.

Cannot be used for the second booster of DPT (for children >4 to 7 years).

Side Effects:
Common side effects include pain/swelling at the injection site, fever, irritability, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Severe reactions are rare.

Pregnancy and Lactation:

Pregnancy: Not applicable, as the vaccine is for infants and young children.

Lactation: Safe for nursing mothers to administer to their infants.

Efficacy Studies at 9 Years:

Myth: Vaccine protection wanes by 9 years.

Fact: Close to 100% seroprotection has been proven at 9 years.

Minimum Age Group:

Approved for infants starting at 6 weeks old, with a maximum age of 2 years.

Contraindications:

Severe allergic reactions to any vaccine component.

Postpone vaccination in cases of acute, severe febrile illness.

Infanrix Hexa is a critical part of routine infant immunization, offering comprehensive protection against six serious diseases. Always consult healthcare providers for detailed schedules and personalized recommendations.
