Indirab Rabies Vaccine
Indirab is a vaccine used for the prevention of rabies, a deadly viral infection that affects the central nervous system. Rabies is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, and once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. Vaccination with Indirab is crucial for both pre-exposure prophylaxis in high-risk individuals and post-exposure treatment following potential exposure to the rabies virus.
How It Works
Indirab is an inactivated rabies vaccine, which means it contains a killed form of the rabies virus. This inactivated virus cannot cause the disease but is still capable of stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies. These antibodies provide immunity against the rabies virus, helping the body to fight off the infection if exposed in the future.
Administration
Pre-exposure Prophylaxis:
- Typically given in a series of three doses.
- Schedule: Day 0, Day 7, and Day 21 or 28.
- Recommended for individuals at high risk of rabies exposure, such as veterinarians, animal handlers, and travelers to areas where rabies is common.
Post-exposure Prophylaxis:
- Administered after potential exposure to the rabies virus.
- Schedule: Five doses on Days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28, along with rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) on Day 0 for individuals who have not been previously vaccinated.
Administration Method: The vaccine is administered as an intramuscular injection, usually in the deltoid muscle of the upper arm for adults and older children, and in the anterolateral thigh for younger children.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
- Headache
- Nausea
- Muscle aches
- Fever
Severe allergic reactions are very rare.

- Lactation: Safe for breastfeeding mothers. Consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended before administration.
Age Group
- Minimum Age: Indirab is approved for use in individuals of all ages, including infants, children, and adults.
Contraindications
- Allergic Reactions: Not recommended for individuals with a history of severe allergic reactions to any component of the vaccine.
